As an Italian citizen and one concerned of the respect of human rights in my own country, permit me to bring to your attention the case of Mr. Chen Ziming.
In 1989, right after the democratic demonstration of Tien-An-Men square, Chen Ziming was sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment and since then Chen was carried on in prison with many health problems such as cancer, hepatitis, inflamed prostate, swollen liver, digestion and heart problems.
In may 1994 Chen Ziming was released “on parole” in order to be operated for a cancer but in June 1995 he was imprisoned again. His second release in November 1996 was very brief also.
I am dismayed to know that Chen, a non-violent prisoner of conscience, has not been released unconditionally and that he is liable to be re-imprisoned at any time.
It is particularly important now for the Chinese people, when the world’s attention is concentrated on China’s economical and technological progress, to demonstrate a deep concern for the respect of human rights.
I am sure that your immediate action on behalf of Chen’s unconditional release will be appreciate throughout the world community
